Jasper is aqua dog.

It doesn't matter what sort of water it is. He wants to be in it. Sea, canal, muddy puddle, he will enter them all with great joy. When we crest the brow of Winey Hill, he charges off at full sprint and plunges with abandon into the pond, showering bewildered horses with canine enthusiasm.

Longing for God is described in the Bible as thirst. The Lord says in Isaiah 55:“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters;"

That's because water is basic requirement for life. Without it we die. Therefore there is no better way to describe life without God at the centre. Without him we are dead.

The way that we drink from the Lord is by listening. Isaiah 55 goes on 55:3 Give ear and come to me;  listen, that you may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David.

It is in his word that we find life giving water. The thirst quenching news of his everlasting faithful love. A love promised to King David in the Old Testament and fulfilled in David's great descendant, Jesus. The one who says to a thirsty woman, who had tried to find love in a string of broken relationships "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:13)

I need to drink deep on God's word in the Bible, that my thirst might be satisfied on the extraordinary love of God in Jesus. A love that gave His one and only Son that we might have eternal life.

As the Psalmist almost said:

"As the dog pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, my God." Psalm 42:1 (Not quite!)
