Some of you will be old enough to remember the slogan "No sex please we're British!" It referred to the prudish nature of British society. How times have changed!

But there is a danger of people believing the slogan "No sex please we're Christians!" As though the Bible is prudish about sex. It's not. Apart from having a whole book filled with beautiful euphemisms, Song of songs, it also gives radical sexual teaching to married couples.

"Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control." 1 Corinthians 7:5.

Now there's an excuse that I expect not many people have heard. "Not tonight darling. I'm interceding for China!"

Sex is a God given gift to both unite husband and wife and for them to experience physically the joy of their love. Physical intimacy and emotional intimacy are inescapably intertwined.

Sex is vital for marriages. It is not the icing on the cake or an optional extra. Though, because of the fallen world we live in, there will be marriages where sex may be difficult or even impossible. They must be the tiny exception.

In almost all the marriage counselling I have done with Christians there have been problems with sex. If that's the case in your marriage now is the time to get help. Today.

Because Paul is a realist. He recognises that without a regular sexual relationship husbands and wives will be tempted to look elsewhere for gratification. Satan loves a stale and struggling sex life in marriages. Let's not give him the pleasure.
