Gospel According to Exodus Sermon Series

Finding Christ
in the Exodus story

In the opening chapter of Acts we’re told that after the resurrection Jesus spent 40 days with his disciples speaking about “the kingdom of God” (Acts 1:3). What did he talk about?  What ‘material’ did he use?  Did he write a new book or did he explain an old one?  How did he help them understand his person and mission?

In Luke chapter 24 the curtains are drawn on these questions and we get a glimpse of what ‘school with Christ’ might have looked like.  Two disciples are on the road to Emmaus and they’re mourning the death of Jesus when (unbeknownst to them) he joins them in the conversation.  After asking a few probing questions we’re told that, “…beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself" (Luke 24:27).

What did Jesus explain to them?  He basically explained “All the Bible is about me.  Everything you’ve read in the Old Testament points towards my death and resurrection for you.  You might not have known it, but all the stories, poems, and prophecies point to me.”

So that is why we have chosen the title “The Gospel According to Exodus” for this series: Israel’s story is our story in Christ.  Israel’s redemption is our redemption.  Israel’s wandering our wandering.  Israel’s rock, mountain, law, priest, tabernacle, sacrifice, covenant mediator – directs us to our great Redeemer and Saviour Jesus Christ.  In the “Gospel according to Exodus” we ‘preach Christ’ – because Christ is the ultimate reason the book was written in the first place.

Yours in Christ

We’ve chosen the series title because we believe that Israel’s story is our story in Christ.  Israel’s redemption is our redemption.  In this series we preach and find Christ – because He is the ultimate reason the book was written. Pastor Bobby
